SKIN SERIES | A Basic Skincare Routine for Acne
Skincare is confusing. There is a lot of marketing, there are a lot of products, and there are A LOT of false claims. Things get even hairier when talking about products geared towards acne prone skin. Do any of them even work? Well yes and no. I like to think of skincare more along the lines of a supplement. Your diet and lifestyle modifications are doing most of the heavy lifting and leading to long-term, lasting change, but your skincare can speed things along and offer some clarity in the short-term. Acne is a complicated beast, but we do know some things about how it forms. Acne flares when hair follicles become plugged with excess skin cells and sebum. Therefore skincare practices that help to slow sebum production and keep pores clear can go a really long way.
Intuitively though it's easy to see why skincare isn't a miracle fix. It doesn't address the internal imbalances that are causing the acne in the first place. And remember that subtle signals like acne are important indicators of our health as a whole. Don't ignore them. Additionally, I often hesitate to talk about skincare because I don't want you to get caught up in the cycle of buying, trying, and tossing products. But I do want to help you recognize ingredients to look for (and avoid - more on that another time) when purchasing products. So here we are. Enter my guide to helping you topically take care of your skin. Do keep in mind that everyone's skin has different needs. I am just attempting to help you wade through the sea of products available.
Just for you, I created an easy, printable cheat sheet - The Basics: Skincare Made Simple. (This guide is actually a great reference for all skin types!)
